Liminal Space: The Space Between What Was and What is Going to Be
During the pandemic, there has been an increased focus on liminal spaces. Several online art exhibits reflecting this theme have caught our attention, prompting an exploration of what liminal space truly entails.
So, what is a liminal space? It’s the transitional space between what was and what is going to be.
The relevance of this topic during the pandemic is evident as we all navigate through this transitional period, stepping into the unknown of ‘what’s next’.
Living in and through these liminal space times can evoke a range of emotions, from grief, sadness, and loss to hope, inspiration, and renewal – often all at the same time.
In the past, when traveling was more common, various public spaces, such as airports, metros, and museums, began utilizing their liminal spaces (hallways, escalators, elevators, foyers) to display art and convey messages that guided us through to the next space in a deliberate way.
At HR Reliance, our leadership program, LeaderXChange, intentionally creates liminal spaces. Recently, we’ve introduced Drew Dudley’s book, “This Is Day One“, to each cohort. Dudley presents the idea that every day is an opportunity to start anew. Reflecting on this concept, we believe that every day is, in fact, a liminal space. It’s the small moments (what Dudley refers to as “lollipop moments”) in each day that propel us forward into the next space.
Our leadership journey in LeaderXChange guides us collectively from what was to what will be – it’s a liminal space that transitions us from the leaders we once were to the leaders we can become!
At HR Reliance, we would be honored to accompany you on your journey through your own liminal space.
